Intertraffic Innovation Awards 2016 category winners announced in Amsterdam

After almost two years since the last event of its kind, the highly anticipated Intertraffic Amsterdam, the world’s largest exhibition for the road transport industry, commenced yesterday (April 5) with the announcement of the winners of the exhibition’s reputable Innovation Awards.

After reviewing no fewer than 91 candidates, the international jury selected winners for the award categories: Infrastructure, Traffic Management, Safety, Parking and Smart Mobility.

The winner in the Infrastructure category was Smart Ultimate Lighting, created by HR Groep, from the Netherlands. The product is essentially a light-up road sign. However, what makes it so impressive is the fact that, thanks to the same type of innovative illuminating foil used in mobile phone screens, the entire sign is lit with a bright, evenly distributed light. Futhermore, the sign surface itself doubles as a solar panel due to a transparent layer of photovoltaic cells, meaning the sign is completely self-powering. The jury was impressed by its implications for improving safety while also offering sustainability.

A close runner-up was Silca Traffic Systems’ Quick-Cube, a self-supporting LED highway light which can be used for roadworks, events and security. At the flick of a switch, it automatically transforms from a metal cube into a sturdy streetlight, using innovative telescopic engineering.

The Traffic Management category was won by Houston Radar, for its innovative SpeedLane product. It can monitor, count and classify vehicles in up to eight user-defined lanes and includes a camera for visual back-up and ease of installation. Once installed it can start transmitting data to a cloud-based server almost immediately. The jury particularly liked the fact that this product is making advanced traffic management systems accessible to authorities on tight budgets around the world.

A close runner-up was the Ortana Meteos, a road-weather monitoring system, which the jury liked due to its integration of several different types of sensor into one unit.

The UK’s WheelRight won the Safety category with its Tire Condition Management system. The roadside installation is capable of measuring tire pressures when the vehicle is driven over embedded sensors. The company is also working on adding tire-tread measurement to the same system.

The UK arm of Netherlands-based Parkmobile Group won the Parking category for the innovative development of its existing RingGo app. RingGo has been enabling users to pay for their parking remotely for several years – but now the app is being rolled out with the ability to check availability of parking spaces in advance and help with navigation to them. Some space availability is identified by sensors embedded in roads. However, what really impressed the jury was the development of a predictive algorithm, which can tell users what the likely availability is upon arrival, even for spaces that do not have sensors.

The winner in the Smart Mobility category was CROSS Zlin’s InVipo product, a smart platform for use in smart cities and ITS projects, capable of visualization, data aggregation, monitoring and integrating. InVipo is able to integrate a wide variety of data, including traffic counts, parking availability, traffic signal timings and weather in one easy-to-access web-based visualization platform. InVipo was also announced as the overall winner of the Innovation Awards.
