Acquisition combines advanced traffic analytics with network video systems

One of the global market leaders in surveillance cameras and network video products has acquired the pioneer of image-based automatic incident detection (AID) systems, which are currently deployed in hundreds of tunnels and bridges around the world.

Swedish camera maker Axis Communications has announced the acquisition of Citilog, the France-based provider of intelligent real-time video monitoring for traffic and transportation security and safety. The addition of their advanced surveillance technology and experienced personnel strengthens Axis Communications’ position as a developer of IP (internet protocol) network video products that are based on an open platform, and further expands its opportunities in the fast-growing traffic analytics market. In February 2015, the Japanese imaging multinational Canon Inc became Axis’s majority shareholder.

Citilog is a privately held company with 30 employees, headquartered in Paris, France, and with offices in the USA, Hong Kong and Spain. The company offers a suite of video analytics tools and sensors for transportation monitoring, such as AID, traffic data collection, and intersection control, which improve road safety, limit risks and help reduce travel time. Axis and Citilog have worked together for several years on both engineering and sales to provide integrated systems to a number of mutual customers. Citilog’s advanced video analytics and surveillance products are used to identify traffic incidents and deviations in real time to help traffic management centers (TMCs) improve the traffic flows and shortening response times. The company also offers systems to analyze advanced traffic statistics and provide solutions for traffic lights and intersection control. Its products are used worldwide to monitor roadways, tunnels, bridges and other infrastructure, as well as city traffic operations. Alarms can be generated for numerous incidents and traffic saturation detection and enable traffic operators to redirect traffic and thereby adjust efficiency on the fly.

Citilog is the first company to introduce AID, and its systems are deployed at some of the world’s best known landmarks, including: the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels in New York, USA; Lupu, NanPu and Yanpu bridges in Shanghai, China; the M30 tunnels in Madrid, Spain; the Mont-Blanc tunnel spanning France and Italy; and over 900 other locations globally.

“Citilog’s proven products are well known to the traffic sector, and complement our solutions for the most demanding requirements in that market. Their commitment to developing quality, innovative and easy-to-use products is consistent with our approach to provide the most competitive, highest value solution for a range of customer needs,” said Ray Mauritsson, Axis CEO. “We are excited to be able to offer our channel partners and end users state-of-the-art analytics tools that work with their existing Axis network video solutions.”
