Quebec police using ANPR to catch problem motorists

Police in Quebec, Canada, are deploying infrared cameras to catch delinquent drivers. The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system is attached to eight Quebec provincial police cruisers to test how well it can catch drivers with outstanding traffic offences or motorists who have not paid for their licenses.

“When there’s a problem with a license plate, there will be an alarm in the police car to tell the police officers there’s something wrong,” says Sgt. Melanie Paul, a Quebec provincial police spokeswoman.

The system comprises two infrared cameras that can scan 3,000 license plates an hour at speeds of up to 160kph. The cameras download images of license plates to computer hotlists, which comprise stolen license plates, plates associated with stolen cars, prohibited drivers, unlicensed drivers and uninsured vehicles. The Quebec system is linked to the provincial auto insurance board.
