New analyzer removes need for manual counting of vehicles and turns

A new product is now available for gathering vehicle turning movements and traffic counts at intersections, which removes the need for personnel to perform manual counting.

The Intersection Analyzer has been developed by geospatial transportation information technology company Transcend Spatial Solutions, and video analytics specialists Worknet. Intersection Analyzer is a server-based application that can reside at a client’s office, and provides accurate, quantative traffic intersection vehicle counts and turning movements, based on live streaming data from permanently affixed cameras, or recorded video, which has been gathered by temporary cameras mounted in a suitable position.

Many customers are currently employing the Intersection Analyzer during the partnership’s Test Drive program, which has been limited to 50 firms and government agencies across 28 countries. The partner said that the feedback from the Test Drive process was productive and extensive, and the resulting information has been used to produce an enhanced Intersection Analyzer.

Enhancements were made to detail vehicle count reports, video profiles, video calibration and video usage reports, with: new reports that more accurately reflect client requirements; improvements to the profile module, with additional data now accumulated, such as weather conditions; improved validity checks to ensure accurate data input by client; improved client user interface navigation; a help desk module added to product repository; a video quality scorecard module created for client; a usage monitoring module created to track usage by client; verified data accuracy; and improved video calibration methods.

Mike Maziarka, president at Worknet, said, “Intersection Analyzer is an advancement in traffic survey technology, which enables traffic engineers to perform more detailed data analysis of road intersection activity by eliminating manual counting. All aggregated data is automatically generated using computer programming methods.”

When comparing the accuracy of Intersection Analyzer to manual counting, Dr Christina Frederick, dean of human factors and computer systems at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, noted, “I can say with confidence that Intersection Analyzer is more accurate than human counters for traffic studies, when it is provided with video that meets the company’s video quality specifications.”
