Video monitoring specialist Citilog has been selected to provide real-time traffic monitoring and management for the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, which at 36km, is the world’s largest sea-crossing bridge.
Citilog’s automatic incident detection (AID) system is used to monitor traffic on the bridge, which opened to traffic on 2 May, and connects Cixi City, west of Ningbo, to Jiaxing, south of Shanghai. The S-shaped bridge has three lanes of traffic in each direction, with a 100 km/h speed limit.
Citilog’s MediaRoad system processes the CCTV video images from the fixed cameras along the bridge, providing real-time alarms for stopped vehicles, pedestrians and debris. Proactive video image processing identifies incidents when they happen, allowing more immediate responses to prevent further escalation of the incident or correct incidents rapidly to restore optimum operations.
“Our selection by the Hangzhou Bay Bridge operator to use Citilog’s MediaRoad for this bridge is testament to our ability to meet the traffic management needs of any operator around the world,” says Christian Girardeau, chief executive of Citilog. “Safety and security requirements that include video-based monitoring and management on such a critical infrastructure as the Hangzhou Bay Bridge are of utmost importance.”
The bridge is seen is a critical link within the so-called ‘Golden Triangle’ highway network of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Ningbo – one of the hottest economy zones in China, contributing 21% of China’s gross national product from 8% of its total population.
