Georgia's tolling system to be interoperable with Florida and North Carolina

Chris Tomlinson, executive director of the Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA), has announced that the state’s Peach Pass RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) transponder will soon work with Florida’s Sun Pass and North Carolina’s Quick Pass toll collection systems. Tomlinson said the tolling systems for the three states would be interoperable by the end of this year. The move will allow the state’s 270,000 drivers that already possess the windshield-mounted Peach Pass transponders to travel more quickly and easily along Florida’s 1,181km (734 miles) of toll roads, bridges and causeways, as well as several toll roads in North Carolina, including the Western Wake Freeway and Triangle Parkway. The converging of the three systems is Georgia’s first step toward compliance with a federal mandate that requires all states to have interoperable road tolling systems by October 1, 2016.

In December 2013, the SRTA awarded a US$27.7m contract to 3M Toll Services for toll systems integration on the I-75 South Express Lanes and the I-75/I-575 Northwest Corridor Express Lanes projects over a six-year period. 3M’s systems include its 6204 Multiprotocol RFID Toll Reader, which is capable of reading several different transponder technologies, including Georgia’s Peach Pass, E-ZPass, North Carolina’s Quick Pass and Florida’s SunPass transponders, providing a cost effective interoperable toll solution for SRTA. The OmniAir-certified 6204 reader can handle up to four lanes simultaneously and fully supports ISO18000-6C, ISO18000-6B, ISO10374 and IAG protocols, with additional protocols supported through firmware updates.
