Siemens has launched a new Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) system that provides reliable backup power at network-critical intersections. The new system is specifically designed and optimized for use in traffic signal applications to ensure that full traffic control is maintained during short term power interruptions and longer term mains power failures. In the event of a power failure, the UPS system switches transparently between mains and battery support without interrupting the operation of the traffic controller, ensuring there is no disruption to traffic control. The new UPS system uses the latest lead crystal battery technology to deliver excellent charge performance, very high operating efficiency and enhanced operational life.
Temperature resistant and easier to transport, lead crystal batteries offer a much wider operating temperature range than traditional lead acid batteries and are classified as non-hazardous, making them safe to transport by land, sea or air. For most traffic applications, the use of these batteries eliminates the need for special cabinets, reducing the overall cost of the UPS system and increasing their reliability. UPS fault and status reporting is provided by a Siemens Remote monitoring and UTC and optional enhanced management of the UPS system can be delivered via a dedicated IP-connected management system.
Keith Manston, head of product management at Siemens, explained, “Lead crystal batteries offer an operational life of typically 6-12 years, compared to 2-4 years achievable with standard lead acid types and provide a charge time that is potentially faster than conventional lead acid batteries. With no requirement for expensive and large air conditioned enclosures, the new UPS solution can be housed in standard Siemens ST950-style controller cabinets and is both scalable to suit intersection load capacity of up to 2KW and ideally suited to LED sites.”
