Transmax wins award

Transmax, along with its project partners in the Queensland Government’s Departments of Emergency Services, Community Safety, and Transport and Main Roads, have won the Government Category at the 2013 iAwards, which is Australia’s leading technology awards program. The partners won the prestigious award for the deployment of the Emergency Vehicle Priority (EVP) system in the state, which is an intuitive and dynamic ITS solution that automatically interrupts normal traffic signal operations, providing a green traffic light signal to emergency response vehicles in advance of their arrival at an intersection. The Queensland EVP deployment improves safety for both frontline officers and the general public, reducing the number of times an emergency vehicle needs to cross intersections against a red traffic light. The system reduces the number of unpredictable reactions by drivers who attempt to move out of the way of emergency vehicles whilst in a queue at a red traffic light. The result is faster travel times and a safer work environment with minimal detrimental impact to other road users.

Transmax CEO, Charles Commins, explained, “The Queensland Government identified the need to address the issue of an increasing demand for emergency services alongside an increasing population and worsening traffic congestion. We worked collaboratively with our government project partners to develop this new EVP technology that reduces travel times for emergency services vehicles and improves safety for both frontline officers and other road users. A trial of the EVP solution in Southport has been very positive, with results showing improvements in travel time of between 10-18% along major routes. This award win is a wonderful achievement and we are proud of the collaborative approach that was taken to develop this new technology that is helping save lives, and we are hoping to extend the success of EVP so that other states in Australia can benefit from this innovation.”
