FLIR acquires Traficon

FLIR Systems, an expert in the design and manufacture of infrared and thermal imaging systems, has acquired Traficon International for approximately US$46 million in cash. FLIR has taken over all shares from Traficon’s main stockholder, Indufin, as well as all shares from the company’s management team and employees. Based in Wevelgem, Belgium, Traficon is a global leader in video image processing software and hardware for traffic analysis. The company’s technology is used in the automatic detection of road traffic incidents, as well as data collection, and intersection vehicle and pedestrian presence detection. Over the past 25 years, the company has delivered more than 80,000 video-based transportation control and monitoring systems worldwide, including installations in more than 500 tunnels. The company is currently working on projects to deploy traffic monitoring systems at the Södra Länken and Norra Länken tunnels in Stockholm, Sweden, and is also installing more than 70 image processing boards at the Dartford Tunnel on the M25 London Orbital Motorway in the UK.

FLIR believes that its infrared expertise will be a good fit for the traffic monitoring market, with night-time detection its most obvious application area. Commenting on the purchase, Earl Lewis, president and CEO of the Portland, Oregon, headquartered company, said, “We have shown that thermal imaging is a superior solution for monitoring traffic. This acquisition will accelerate the adoption of our technology in the expanding worldwide market for video-based traffic control solutions, as we utilize Traficon’s strong distribution network. Additionally, its video analytics capabilities will be integrated into our other imaging lines of business, offering enhanced functionality and the development of new applications.”

Traficon’s CEO, Lode Caenepeel, noted, “Our two companies have been working on joint projects for over a year, combining our video detection algorithms with FLIR’s thermal imaging technology. Already there we saw great synergies between both companies and many interesting possibilities for future collaboration. That is why we believe the choice of FLIR as a partner for future growth is a logical one and we are glad that FLIR will be supporting us in our efforts to offer high-quality video detection products and solutions for the traffic market.”
