The Dubai Traffic Police have announced that motorists who are caught exceeding the limit by its new speed cameras will be alerted by an SMS text message, which will inform them of their violation, within minutes of the offence taking place. The Dubai police have also announced that 50 new cameras will be deployed on highways in the emirate. The new cameras bring the total number of roadside enforcement units in Dubai to 630. The force says the devices will be linked to the country’s vehicle registration and traffic control systems and a text message will be sent to the driver caught breaking the road regulations on camera.
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, deputy director of Dubai Traffic Police, said: “The recorded offence will go immediately to the specific department, which will send a text message to the driver. This will cut time and no one can object to their offence. The radar-based camera systems will be placed at junctions in newly-constructed areas. We have noticed motorists driving recklessly in those areas, taking advantage of the fact there are no radars. They have been crossing red traffic light signals, causing many fatal accidents. The new radars will record vehicles both crossing red signals and speeding. We are nearly finished this project. We are cooperating with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on the locations of the radars. It will be up and running from October.”
