VDOT launches E-ZPass transponder

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has launched ‘E-ZPass Flex’; a new E-ZPass transponder that is able to switch between toll-free and toll-paying travel on the 495 Express Lanes, which are scheduled to open by the end of 2012. Because the 495 Express Lanes is an all-electronic tolling (AET) facility, every vehicle traveling on the I-495 will need an E-ZPass transponder. Although every standard E-ZPass DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communications) transponder will work in the Express Lanes, only the new Flex unit will enable drivers to select between toll-paying mode and HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) mode.

Drivers with three or more people in the car will be able to use a manual switch on the E-ZPass Flex transponder, in order to change the vehicle into ‘HOV mode’, which will allow it to use the 495 Express Lanes toll free. VDOT’s chief deputy commissioner, Charlie Kilpatrick, explained, “When it comes to reaching important destinations in Virginia, travelers now have choices. Travelers can take the bus or Metro, drivers can take the 495 Express Lanes or Capital Beltway general purpose lanes, and with the flip of a switch on the E-ZPass Flex and two passengers, choose to carpool toll-free on the Capital Beltway.”
