Redflex selects Basler cameras for Student Guardian

Redflex has chosen Basler IP cameras for its new Student Guardian system, which protects children around school buses. The system is intended to deter drivers in the USA from illegally passing stopped school buses by prosecuting them if they do. The Student Guardian system uses two cameras per school bus, one on the front and one on the driver’s side at the rear, to monitor traffic while the stop arm of the bus is deployed. Whenever cars illegally pass a school bus, the cameras capture high-definition video and high-resolution images of license plates and drivers. The captured image data is then submitted to local law enforcement agencies to determine whether a citation is warranted.

The Basler BIP2-2500c-dn IP camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels, which can easily monitor three lanes of traffic, even in low light situations. The camera uses H.264 compression that makes optimal use of the available bandwidth. It offers: a resolutionof 2560 x 1920 pixels (CMOS); a maximum frame rate of 15 fps; flexible areas of interest (AOIs); MJPEG, MPEG-4, and H.264 (High Profile levels up to 5) video compression; DC iris drive; Power over Ethernet (PoE); and an Infra Red-cut filter. Basler’s ITS product line manager, Enzio Schneider, commented, “Intelligent Transportation Systems strive to make all of our lives safer.
