Olympic hopes for SmartTrans' smart taxis

SmartTrans is optimistic that it will win the contract to manage the transportation of 30,000 VIP guests and media during the Beijing Olympics.

A fleet of up to 5,000 Volkswagen vehicles will be provided for the service and SmartTrans has developed a high-tech system to ensure that the passengers are delivered to the right destinations on every trip, every day.

Each VIP will be allocated a ‘smart’ phone, which sends the SmartTrans service center a GPS location and provides helpful information, such as the language spoken by the person and their cultural background.

One aim is to ensure that people with compatible backgrounds share the same rides. Each car will be fitted with a system allowing the driver to view a picture of the VIP they are collecting.
