Kentucky installs traffic message signs

Kentucky’s Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is installing traffic message boards along Interstate 24 in Paducah this week as part of a US$630,000 ITS deployment.

The new signs, which are due to be operational by July this year, will provide area highway and emergency officials with some new traffic management capabilities, claims Jim LeFevre, chief district engineer in KYTC District 1. “We’ll be able to instantly display information about traffic and weather conditions in the area,” explains LeFevre. “This new capability will be useful anytime we have to implement lane restrictions or need to communicate other emergency information to motorists.”

The system includes cameras that allow personnel in the District 1 operations center at Reidland to monitor traffic flow. “Our operations personnel will be able to watch for traffic backups, allowing us to more quickly evaluate traffic flow and put up instant alerts through the message system,” adds LeFevre. “This will greatly enhance our ability to instantly get crucial information out to travelers.”

In addition to the variable message boards, KYTC is installing traffic cameras at various locations on I-24, US 45 and US 60.

The message boards are being installed by Bluegrass Electrical Consultants.
