Variable road-charging project wins funding

Telent has won a grant from the UK government-funded Technology Strategy Board for the development of 3rd Generation Road Side Equipment (3GRSE) for use in road-charging systems. The grant will enable Telent to manage a consortium including Efkon UK, TSEU, TRL and CitySync, to develop a new data collection process to support a fairer charging environment for motorists.

Once developed, the new system will facilitate Time-Distance-Place (TDP) technology that will allow accurate, variable charging to take account of whether motorists are driving in rural areas or major cities. The system will use existing infrastructure to allow TDP to form an integral part of existing local authority urban traffic management and control (UTMC) systems.

The technology will also provide a package of measures designed to manage congestion and improve accessibility, safety and the environment.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Telent,” says Peter Eccleson, director and highways general manager at Telent. “With more than 30 years’ experience within the transport industry, we are proud to be leading a consortium of companies who each bring a wealth of expertise and knowledge to the table. We can focus on developing a leading-edge technology and look forward to a successful future together.”
