Payzone wins Ireland's M50 toll contract

Right: Payzone has won a five-year contract to introduce barrier free tolling on Ireland's M50 motorway, which is a primary route around Dublin, Ireland’s capital city

Payzone has won the five-year contract to provide retail and online toll payment services for users of Ireland’s M50 motorway from August this year. M50 users who register with BetEire Flow, the M5O toll operator, will benefit from lower toll rates.

Non-registered road users will be able to pay the M50 toll charges at 2,000 convenience stores that already offer Payzone’s mobile phone top-up services, via the internet or by telephone using Payzone’s e-payment solutions.

The M50 motorway is a primary route around Dublin, Ireland’s capital city, and carries more than 100,000 vehicles per day. The Irish National Roads Authority announced last February that a barrier-free tolling system would replace the existing barrier toll system on the M50 in August 2008.

“This places Payzone in a strong position to successfully bid for similar contracts in other European countries as governments and public authorities seek new ways of managing road usage in the context of traffic congestion and carbon emissions,” says John Nagle, Payzone’s chief executive. “This new service from Payzone leverages the R&D investment that we made some time ago in developing innovative parking and other payment solutions for the road transport sector and we will continue to respond to the emerging needs of the road transport sector across Europe.”

Payzone was formed by the merger of Alphyra and Cardpoint, operates in 21 countries across Europe, processing over 630 million transactions per year with a value of more than US$19 billion (Euro 13 billion). BetEire Flow is a consortium led by the French toll operator Sanef and the French systems designer, supplier and integrator, CS.
