TRL Software and Savoy Computing Services have announced the release of a link between TRL’s ARCADY 7 and Savoy’s AutoTrack Junctions, which will reduce the time required to design roundabouts and allows for more accurate optimum and efficient designs. Roundabout geometry is designed according to the considerations and constraints of the site – a traffic engineer then analyzes the design to assess its operational efficiency. The final design process involves adjusting geometries and re-analysing until both geographical and operational requirements are met. The latest version of the ARCADY software, 7.1, has been released with several small modifications and a system to enable the real-time data link. The ‘link’ is an additional software product, which requires a further licence.
The link is initiated automatically and the two programs communicate seamlessly to each other. ARCADY 7 provides results such as RFC, level of service and values of queues and delays, which are all displayed in Autotrack and are updated in real-time as changes to geometry are made. Using the link between these two programs, one single interactive environment has been created in which all relevant parameters are constantly updated; this allows an engineer to see immediate effects. The iterative nature of this new design process provides reduced design time, improved design efficiency and ultimately reduced costs.
AutoTrack Junctions allows engineers to design roundabouts with built-in national or user-defined standards but, unlike most other software, it allows the user the freedom to experiment with designs that exceed the limits defined by the chosen standard. The system monitors the design and displays warning symbols when parameters exceed the standard. The built-in audit function then lists any conflicts and provides the designer with an opportunity to justify them. The system is currently available with predefined UK and US roundabout standards, but allows the user to create or edit others. The new link also allows Junctions to pass geometric data to ARCADY, which in turn passes back flow and capacity data. These values – along with other critical analysis values, such as fastest line speed and entry radius – are displayed in easy-to-read panels on the roundabout in Junctions, allowing the designer to monitor the performance of the roundabout as the geometry is adjusted.
