Toole appointed acting executive director of FHWA

Bud Wright retires this week from his role as executive director of the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). His role will be filled for the time being by Joe Toole, who is the FHWA’s associate administrator for professional and corporate development.

Wright served for six years as FHWA executive director and was previously the Administration’s program manager for safety and the director of the FHWA Office of Budget and Finance. During his 32-year career with the FHWA, Wright was involved in the development of the landmark Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) and the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA).

Toole began his career with the FHWA in 1975, and has held multiple positions with the Administration. He will serve as the acting executive director while a permanent director is recruited.
