Highways Agency to hold industry day on potential of V2I systems

England’s Highways Agency (HA) has announced that it is holding an industry day on cooperative vehicle-highway communication systems. The HA is inviting all interested parties to attend a minister-led Industry Briefing to be held on March 3, 2011 in central London. In order to raise awareness of the event, the HA has placed a Prior Information Notice in the Official Journal of the European Union. The event will provide an overview of the HA’s thinking in this area and invite responses in confidence by third parties with potential ideas and proposals.

The HA has been closely following developments in systems for enabling communications between vehicles and the highway infrastructure and cooperative Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) systems). The Agency sees great potential in these technologies to bring benefits to drivers, whilst also representing a potential commercial opportunity to private technology suppliers, automotive manufacturers and service providers. It is keen to explore with potential providers what opportunities might exist for the HA to facilitate the use of these systems on the strategic road network, including what opportunities might exist for the development of traffic-related in-vehicle services for drivers.

Further information about the content and location of the event will be provided in an information pack, which will be sent out closer to the date of the event to parties who have registered their interest. On receipt of the information pack, interested parties will required to confirm their registration of attendance. The Agency requests that any questions are reserved for the day of the event. The Information Notice can be viewed at http://ted.europa.eu/udl?uri=TED:NOTICE:010260-2011:TEXT:EN:HTML
