Swiss Federal Roads Office to modernize all roadsigns

The Swiss government’s Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) has announced that the country’s often confusing selection of roadsigns is to be overhauled and modernized, with the overall number of roadsigns to be reduced to the minimum needed for safety. Among the major recommendations, the ‘General Speed Limit 50km’ signs that are found at the entrance to municipalities will be taken down in favor of the municipalities’ name sign, which would signal the beginning of the speed limit. This is in line with current European standards. The consultations will run until May 15.

Other signs to be overhauled are those warning drivers of low-flying or taxiing airplanes, which will be taken down, as will motorway entry signs that warn drivers of merging traffic. The ‘Danger: pedestrian crossing’ sign, which currently warns drivers of a poorly visible crossing will be withdrawn completely, as all dangerous crossings will be redesigned or removed by FEDRO, in order to improve road safety. All signs in general will be modernized and human figures are to be made gender-neutral.
