Catalan Transport (SCT) wins traffic management award

The Spanish Government agency, Catalan Transport (SCT), which is chaired by Josep Perez-Moya, has won the first prize in the category ‘Best Traffic Management Service’ by the Annual Forum of the EasyWay project, which is coordinated by the Directorate General for Transport and Energy for the European Union. After almost a year of implementation, European experts have acknowledged the work carried out by the SCT to ‘harmonize mobility and sustainability in the road network in the metropolitan area of Barcelona’.

Designed to combat congestion and pollution, the variable speed project is the first of it type in Spain. The scheme is applied over 19.4 km of the C-31 and 14.3km of the C-32. Since 15 January, the speed limit can vary between 80 and 40 km/h depending on congestion, accidents, pollution and weather conditions. The award-winning project, which was promoted by the Generalitat, was implemented in the midst of fierce political controversy. The CiU (Catalan nationalist party) and PPC Peoples Party of Catalonia) have both opposed the scheme to minimize the speed to 80 km/h around the entrance to Barcelona, from the outset.

EasyWay is a project for Europe-wide ITS deployment on main TERN (Trans European Road Network) corridors that is promoted by national road authorities and operators with associated partners including, the automotive industry, telecom operators and public transport stakeholders. It sets clear targets, identifies the set of necessary ITS services to be deployed (Traveler Information, Traffic Management and Freight and Logistic Services) and allows the European mobility stakeholders to achieve a coordinated and combined deployment of these services.
