Improved safety for visually impaired pedestrians

A new device that can be attached to traffic lights and which vibrates to let pedestrians know when it is safe to cross has been developed by Tandem Joint Innovation, an industrial design company, and CETEMMSA, a technology centre specializing in smart products.

Right: Vibraile is a new, innovative and simple to install system to alert visually impaired pedestrians when it is safe to cross at an intersection

The product, called Vibraile, was presented in Madrid at the Traffic Conference, which was held at the International Road Safety and Equipment Exhibition, which took place in Madrid at the end of October. The aim of the new innovation is to ensure the safety of visually impaired people at crossroads where acoustic signals may put them at risk.

Vibraile is an interactive tactile device. When visually impaired people put their hand upon it and the traffic lights turn green, it vibrates to let them know that it is completely safe to cross. Installation is achieved simply without having to make any alterations to the traffic lights in the public highway. Its main advantages are its simple and reliable technology, reduced noise pollution and the fact that it is universally understandable.

The product is now being installed as a pilot project in as many places as possible with a view to assessing its effectiveness and studying the degree to which it is accepted by visually impaired people.
