Telematics feature in US stimulus plan

Right: Further details of which telematics technologies will feature in President Obama's economic stimulus plan are likely to emerge in the next few days

The new US administration confirmed yesterday that over US$90 billion of the US$825 billion of President-elect Obama’s economic stimulus package is to be spent on transport projects, but it is not yet clear how much of the money will be devoted to intelligent transports systems.

So far we can be sure that over US$2 billion will be spent on modernising existing traffic systems, including the installation of more variable messaging signs, and the development of a nationwide traffic communication network linking cars to traffic centers.

One other technology expected to feature in the stimulus package, include synchronized traffic lights at signalized intersections.

John Horsley, executive director of the American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials says, “Transportation investment is a sure bet for rebuilding the nation’s economy now and into the future. We applaud the House leadership for taking this key step and urge Congress to move with all deliberate speed to deliver a bill to President-elect Obama. This is a time to restore hope to America and build the foundation for a better tomorrow.”

Providing it is passed by Congress, a finalized bill entitled the “American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009” will be presented to President-elect Obama for his signature on 13 February.
